The Context of Success

The families we work with fully recognise the substantial opportunities their success can provide for their children. However, we have yet to encounter a family whose children haven't experienced difficulties, in at least one of the following areas:

  • Forming their identity
  • Cultivating motivation and purpose
  • Distinguishing between net-worth and self-worth
  • Navigating social environments that judge them based on their family name or what they have, rather than their true selves
  • Feeling great pressure to meet real or perceived expectations
  • Addressing feelings of loneliness and isolation
  • Overcoming the guilt and shame attached to privilege
  • Managing reputation during the natural formative years of boundary-testing
  • Challenging imposter syndrome and self-doubt

Adolescence & the Transition into Adulthood

Additionally, the transition from adolescence into adulthood is an exciting yet demanding time. It can pose challenges for both parents and their children. You may recognise some of the following changes in your child’s behaviour:

  • Mood swings
  • A heightened need for privacy
  • Emotionally charged opinions
  • Physical changes in their body and appearance
  • Questioning or rejecting authority
  • A propensity for risk-taking
  • Heightened reliance on technology
  • Pushing boundaries (both yours and theirs)
  • Shifts in communication patterns
  • The development of intense emotional connections, be it friendly or romantic

The good news is, within reason, all of this is quite normal and to be expected in healthy developing young adults, but sometimes it can feel overwhelming.

During such moments, providing some additional support can make all the difference, to both parent and child.
